Negro Creek Land Donation

For many years the Black community of Grey County has recognized the significant historical importance of the Negro Creek area as an original settlement of various Black families.

The Negro Creek Committee members (Rob Green, Nancy Lee, Gael Jackson, Linnette Williams, Tony Miller, Ben Heywood-Macleod, Carolynn and Sylvia Wilson, Stephanie McMullen, and Don Miller), extend their heartfelt thanks to James Douglas (a direct descendant of one of the Early Black Settlers of Negro Creek), and his family for their generous donation of 2 acres of land that will be the site of the future Memorial to the Early Black Settlers of Negro Creek. This donation reflects our shared ancestral heritage and helps us all give voice to the forgotten

We would also like to recognize the Negro Creek Committee’s Community Friends for their unwavering support and express our sincerest gratitude to Mayor Scott Mackey, Deputy Mayor Terry McKay, CAO Patty Sinnamon, and all Town Council members for their cooperation in working with the Douglas family to make this donation possible.

We are eternally grateful and full of love and admiration for our ancestors for their hard work, ingenuity, perseverance, dedication, and commitment. They sought not only to improve their own lives but also to instill pride and character in us, their direct descendants, for generations to come.
