The Memorial To The Early Black Settlers of Negro Creek
The Negro Creek Committee members are beginning the process of fundraising for the Early Black Settlers of Negro Creek Memorial Park. This initiative has been made possible by the generous donation of a 2-acre parcel of land from the Douglas family, whose ancestors were among the notable settlers in the area.
The committee aims to honor the Early Black Settlers through this memorial park, creating a space that commemorates their lives and contributions while educating the public about the area's rich Black history and heritage.
The site plan has been designed by local architect Larry May, who has graciously donated his expertise and time to this project. The vision for the memorial park includes an inscription plaque honouring these fearless Freedom Seekers, with twelve surname markers surrounding it. Accompanied by two storyboard plaques that commemorate the history of the Fight to Save the Name of the Road from 1995 to 1997, and honour the Saugeen Ojibway Nation.
The park's main feature is a walking trail with twelve distinct stops, each dedicated to one of the early Black settler families. At each stop, there will be a storyboard plaque that provides a brief overview of the family's history, accompanied by a QR code linking to the Negro Creek website for more in-depth information. Additionally, benches will be placed along the trail to offer visitors a place to rest, reflect, and remember.
This design aims to create an engaging and educational experience that honours the diverse stories and influence of these pioneering families. It will stand as a testament to the enduring legacy of the Early Black Settler families and encourage a deeper appreciation for Ontario’s local history.
We would like to express our gratitude to the Mayor and Council members of the Township of Chatsworth for their ongoing support of this project.
